Just a quick heads up to all hosts reading.

Airbnb recently added a new category to Amenities for listings. Its called ‘Essentials’.  Its to let guest know that you supply the basics, such as towels, bed sheets, soap and toilet paper.

Of course the majority of us supply these basic things for our Airbnb guests. But the problem is that this new box is not automatically ticked!!!

So please stop reading this and head over to your dash board and update your listing so guest know they don’t need to bring a stack of Andrex.

This little tip was found by Michael, an Airbnb host in Los Angeles.  Cheers buddy…

We are new to Airbnb but have furnished an apartment in our home and have used it as “guest quarters” for the past three years. In addition, a manager at local company stays there two or three nights a week to eliminate what is sometimes a round trip journey home of two hours. Very convenient when meetings run late. For this reason we are confident that we have the essentials stocked in our apartment but your suggestion to publish a list on the listing site is brilliant. Thank you for your thoughtful articles!

When traveling for a short time it would be nice to know what is supplied. If you have a dish washer should your clients need to supply dishwasher cleaner for their stay? Should they be expected to buy a supply? It would be a simple thing for a host to supply 3 dish washer cleaning tablets and 3 washing machine tablets per stay. That way a traveler does not need to carry these little used items and nor do they have to buy a container of 20 to 30 tablets that they could not use. People should be told what to expect so they know what they are responsible for. I have been at airbnbs this month that have provided absolutely everything and some that have provided towels and sheets and that is it. There was not even shampoo. Airbnb should have a consistent expectation for labels like essentials or make people be specific. It is never fun spending your vacation trying to find a shopping facility that is open let alone find something reasonably priced or sized for a traveler. I paid $1400.00 for a 6 day stay and have to supply shampoo, shower gel, toilet paper, not to speak of dish washer soap and laundry detergent. Not reasonable in my mind especially when it is a surprise when I was told essentials were supplied.

I recently stayed at a Airbnb sharing a room in a house. We were not supplied with our own soap and was wondering if it is considered reasonable to share a very used soap already in the bathroom?
I was very disappointed at the level of cleanliness in the house. E.g. dirty bath mat, pubic hair on the floor and hairs in the bath, no hand towel in the bathroom or supplied separately.
    Am I being too fussy?
